Here’s what you never knew about Blue Ivy Carter

Beyoncé is a mysterious celebrity. She’s so guarded about her public persona that it’s thrilling when she even comments via a publicist, via email, via a profile, about her mom. So it’s no wonder that details about her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, are scarce. She’s a 5-year-old who never asked to be in the spotlight and deserves her privacy, after all.

That being said, of course everyone wants to know about the adorable spawn of Bey. Her mom’s the queen, so that makes her kind of a princess, right? Here are some juicy (and totally kid-friendly!) details about Blue Ivy that you might not know.

She’s guested on tracks for both her mom and dad

You can already hear Blue’s little voice on songs from both her mother and father. At the very end of “Blue” (get it?) from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album, you can hear the then-toddler trying to pronounce her mom’s name, and getting close with “Bee-sa-yay.” She also co-stars in the music video for the song. And on Jay-Z’s album 4:44, the song “Legacy” is all about what he’ll leave to his kids after he dies. The track begins with Blue Ivy asking, “Daddy, what’s a will?”

No one was allowed to touch her as a baby

This is admittedly gossip, but let’s be honest: it’s pretty believable. Rumor has it that Bey and Jay didn’t let anyone touch baby Blue Ivy without wearing a surgical mask, as well as latex gloves.

But, come to think of it, people should probably be required to wear a surgical mask and gloves before coming anywhere near Queen Bey. You wouldn’t want your “normal” to rub off on her and contaminate her coolness.

She toured with her mom as a baby

Having the chance to go on tour with Beyoncé herself is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Unfortunately for Blue Ivy, she probably doesn’t even remember it, since she was 19 months old at the time. That’s okay, because doting mom Beyoncé remembers it enough for the both of them.

“It’s really interesting because I’m touring with my daughter for the first time and my dream has always been to be able to balance my life and my career,” the singer said at a press conference (via Cosmopolitan) in 2013. “I think it’s the one thing that women struggle with because it’s so difficult.”

Blue will now be able to teach Sir and Rumi the ropes of touring with mom.

She’s a standout dancer just like her mom

It’s no surprise that anyone related to Beyoncé has some moves. TMZ published a video of Blue Ivy’s recent ballet recital, and the eldest Knowles-Carter child is a true standout. Honestly, she’s killing it — to the tune of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September.” Maybe her next appearance in one of her parents’ music videos will involve some choreography.

Beyoncé is fighting to trademark Blue Ivy’s name

When your mom is a brand, you’re born into a thriving business. So it makes sense that Beyoncé and Jay-Z tried to trademark the name Blue Ivy soon after she was born in 2012. This could be to sell products under the Blue Ivy brand, as the couple says it is, or just to prevent someone else from naming their kid the same thing.

However, when you give your daughter a name that sounds like an event company, sometimes the name is actually being used by, well, an event company. A corporation called Blue Ivy blocked Bey from getting the trademark to Blue Ivy, and more recently has submitted legal documents to try to prevent her from getting the trademark to the longer version Blue Ivy Carter.

She’s planning a fragrance line

Do you want to smell like a famous kindergartener? Well, if Beyoncé’s trademark application for Blue Ivy goes through, one of the businesses she has in mind is a fragrance line. Could Blue Ivy perfume be the next Kylie Jenner lip kit? (Meaning, another thing you see on a celebrity Instagram account that you might not need but really, really want.)

She wore an $11,000 dress to the VMAs

The Knowles-Carters aren’t the type of family who worry about spending money on clothes that their kids are just going to grow out of quickly. The already incredibly stylish Blue Ivy attended the 2016 VMAs wearing a Mischka Aoki gown that cost $10,950. According to E! News, the mini “Grande Royalle” gown featured a “laser-cut bodice and intricate 3-D gold metallic appliqué.” Hopefully she didn’t spill any apple juice on it.

She slays at Halloween

Seeing Blue Ivy’s Halloween costumes throughout the years brings a new meaning to trick or treat. Her adorableness mixed with her parents’ creativity is definitely a treat to behold every October.

In 2014, Beyoncé and Blue dressed up as Janet and Michael Jackson for Halloween. These costumes had everything: a duo theme, cuteness, humor, spot-on styling, and on-point accessories (Blue’s mini microphone and sunglasses!). There’s a high bar for celebrity Halloween costumes and now it sometimes seems like famous people’s publicists have planned their clients’ October 31st looks, months in advance. But even amidst some fierce competition, this costume was one of the best.

In 2016, she accompanied her mom and dad dressed as iconic 1950s Ken and Barbie. Blue went for an ’80s rocker look for a more updated Barbie style. That was a busy Halloween, because Blue also had the chance to dress up with her mom as the ’90s group Salt-N-Pepa. In either decade, she served up some seriously enviable Halloween style.

Kim and Kanye attended her 5th birthday party

No word on whether Blue Ivy invited everyone in her class to her fifth birthday party, but according to Us Weekly, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were in attendance. Even though Kanye had recently gone on a rant about Bey and Jay at his abbreviated Sacramento concert, apparently everyone let it go and moved on. The couple reportedly visited Blue Ivy for a birthday celebration January 6th, 2017, at her family’s LA home.

She knows how to shut down the paparazzi

In a video that is both adorable and will make you feel guilty for your interest in her life, Blue Ivy can be seen expertly shutting down the paparazzi in a way that shows she’s familiar with their invasive presence. In June 2016, then-4-year-old Blue waved her finger at photographers and said, “No pictures!”

The mini fashionista likes to match her mom

If your mom was Beyoncé, you’d want to match her too! The reason Blue Ivy is so fierce is because she has the ultimate fashion icon to look up to. She and mom Bey can be frequently spotted in matching and coordinating outfits. Beyoncé shared pics of their matching floral gowns on her Instagram feed at the ultimate Instagrammer’s dream house… the Museum of Ice Cream, complete with pink walls, banana swings, and pools full of sprinkles.

The pair played dress up again when they hit up the Beauty and the Beast premiere in vibrant green dresses. Beyoncé’s Gucci gown cost a reported $26,000 and Blue Ivy also got in on the Gucci game with her own $2,100 green and pink dress, complete with embroidered snakes and parrots, as well as embellishments. Perhaps Blue Ivy will be the first teenager to ever want to match her mother.

She was featured at the Grammys

Performing at the Grammys is a lifelong goal for most recording artists, so being able to say that you were featured in a Grammy performance before your sixth birthday is pretty spectacular. Blue Ivy, along with her grandmother, was featured as a hologram in Beyoncé’s iconic 2017 Grammys performance. Bey once again outdid herself, performing pregnant and honoring the role of mothers.

“Your mother is a woman, and women like her cannot be contained. I think of lovers as trees. Growing to and from one another. Searching for the same light. Why are you afraid of love? You think it’s not possible for someone like you, but you are the love of my life. The love of my life,” she quoted from her album Lemonade. Becoming Blue’s mother has clearly inspired much of Beyoncé’s work.

She took fashion inspiration from Prince

As if being featured in Bey’s stunning performance wasn’t enough, Blue Ivy stole the 2017 Grammys again when she rocked her pink, Prince-inspired pink Gucci suit while sitting with her dad. Blue channeled “Purple Rain” era Prince with her high ruffled white shirt and the fitted suit.

Using a price list for comparable items from Gucci, Us magazine estimates the jacket retailed for $765, the pants for $335, and the adorable, glittery cat purse (also Gucci) for $2,490. It was just the right amount of chic and bling that perfectly suited Beyoncé’s mini-me as she watched her mom perform.

The stylish little suit also served as a sweet tribute, as not only did Beyoncé open the Grammy Awards with Prince in 2004, the 2017 Grammys had a full tribute segment for Prince, who passed away in April 2016.

She loves being a big sis

Welcoming a new sibling into the house is tough for any child, but welcoming two at once would be overwhelming. However, it seems Blue Ivy is slaying big sisterhood as well ever since Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed twins Rumi and Sir in June 2017.

Proud grandma Tina Knowles Lawson couldn’t help but gush about how well Blue Ivy adjusted to life as a big sister, sharing just how caring and nurturing her first granddaughter has been. “She’s very proud and very excited,” Lawson told Entertainment Tonight. “She’s a good big sister, she really is.” Richard Lawson, Tina’s husband, agreed. “She cares for them a lot,” he shared.

She just got an amazing new house

Bey and Jay recently bought a new home in LA, and it’s safe to say Blue Ivy is going to get an amazing new bedroom. According to the LA Times, the couple purchased their new Bel-Air home for $88 million. The home boasts 30,000 square feet of living space. That is a lot a room for tea parties and hide and seek.

The home also comes with a full spa, media room, and four pools, almost enough for each member of the family to have his or her own. Blue will have plenty of time to shoot some hoops with her parents in the indoor basketball court. Not surprisingly, this home sale is now the highest in Los Angeles county in 2017.

She knows how to work the camera

When you come from pop and hip hop royalty, there’s a good chance you know your way around a camera. Blue Ivy has followed in her mother’s footsteps with both her flawless style, as well as her posing. Beyoncé shared family pictures from a trip to the Grand Canyon, and it was Blue Ivy who quickly stole the show.

Rocking a sun hat and adorable XO sunglasses, Blue was ready for an adventure. She playfully posed for the camera before skipping off in her Converse for more fun with mom and dad.

She snaps with her mom

Queen Bey fans everywhere lost it when they realized Beyoncé has been on Snapchat this whole time, and no one knew it. She shared this deer selfie with Blue Ivy at the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans on her Instagram page, and fans immediately began begging for her Snapchat name. As any good mom knows, a little phone time (especially with fun animal faces) can buy you a little time with a 5-year-old, so we look forward to the next Blue Ivy snap filter!

She’s just getting started

As of this writing, Blue Ivy is only 5 (…and a half — her half-birthday was July 6 and at that age, these things matter), and she has already made memorable contributions to pop culture. In the coming years, she’ll probably be one of the coolest grade-schoolers, then teenager, then young adult — ever. Before you know it, she and North West may be running things, but you know what? With these future girlbosses in charge, we’ll probably all be the better for it.
